Children’s Room

The Children’s Room was the former Assessor’s Office. It shows the type of toys children played with in by-gone years,  a collection of dolls, games, toys and also samples of clothes, some of which date back to the early 1800’s. One of the highlights of the room is a beautiful old doll house. The doll house was presented to the three Sloper sisters Carlotta, Emily and Ella on Christmas, 1913. The house was made for the girls by their Uncle, Cromwell H. Case who was 19 at the time and decorated by their Aunt, Estelle Gard. The furniture was all purchased from the toy company, Schwarz in New York City. Almost all of the pieces in the doll house are originals. In 1967 the doll house was purchased from the family by Margaret Meehan who collected doll houses and was a childhood playmate of the girls. In 1977, she kindly gave it to the Plainville Historical Society. In 1998, Emily, who was then 91 years young, had come to visit the large doll house that had belonged to her and her sisters. She greatly enjoyed her visit and recounted many stories from her past.
