The Old East Street Cemetery located on Route 10, was Plainville’s first burying ground. Many monuments attest to the early residents existence. The marker just inside the gate dates the burials before 1766 to 1856. When the West Cemetery opened in 1845, only a few additional burials took place in the old cemetery. The oldest grave is Stephen Heart’s the son of Mr. Noadiah and Mrs. Lucy Heart, who died September 15, 1766 at the age of one year. The newest stone was that of S. Maria Hills born on July 6, 1822 and died March 17, 1912. Among the monuments you will find two stones of children who drown in the canal. The first is Chauncey Porter the 2nd, who died at the aged of 16. The second is Willard Stanley, who died at the age of 18 months, and is buried close by his grandparents, Roderick & Sally Stanley. It is also the resting place for a number of our veterans from America’s early wars. The cemetery is well maintained and protected.
